Saltwater and Freshwater Rigs
Carolina rig: Works best on the beaches, bays and inlets. More prone to snags in the East River/Hudson but in open sandy bottom, it covers a lot of area. You can adjust the length of your leader between the egg sinker and main line to give your lure different action.

Texas rig: Weedless presentation for working your lure through heavy cover. The Texas rig looks very natural and allows you to cast a weightless soft plastic. Great to plastic worms and jerk shads. You can use a weighted hook as well for better casting distance and faster sinking speed.

Wacky rig: Open water presentation for plastic worms. Try a slow fall and twitch of the rod tip to bring it up off the bottom. Best for Freshwater and the ponds. Use an O-ring to keep it on the hook. Can be rigged weedless which helps with the barbless hook requirement in the ponds/lakes in NYC.

Sabiki rig: Works best in the Winter but can be used year round. Mostly aimed for catching baitfish like Herring but can be used for mult-species and when the fishing is slow.

Fish Finder rig: For chunking bait with larger game fish. This rig is great for the surf but is mult-use. Similar idea to the Carolina rig but works best with heavier sinkers. The hook can move free and independently from the sinker. Fish finder is great for holding heavy current and pyramid sinkers. Whereas a Carolina you'd want to use a retrieve and move with action.

Knots
Palomar - strong, quick to tie and won't slip on braid.
Improved Clinch - Strong, easy to tie and great for Fluorocarbon/ Mono. Make sure to wet the knot before tightening down to avoid a weak spot.
Uni - Strong alternative to the clinch for Fluorocarbon/ Mono
Uni To Uni - Quick and easy to tie, will hold in most scenarios. With 10lb line and under, the connection knot will often cut into each other and break. Best to use with heavier lines 20lb and above.
FG - Strong but takes a while to tie. This is great if you have the time before going out.
Snell - Great for circle hooks. Snell knot puts the line and hook in alignment with each other for a better hook set.
