Beginner / Freshwater / Saltwater / Extra

*Beginner* Intro How To Fish NYC

Before you head out on the water you need a fishing license if you are 16+. There is one for saltwater, one for freshwater or an All waters pass. Take a look at the DEC website and read over the rules regarding the fish species you intend to target. The regulations change every season.

Freshwater or Saltwater? Bait or Lures? It is tough to find a starting point.

Invest very little and see if you like it first. Borrow a friend's rod instead of buying one. Look for used gear.

How To Cast A Spinning Fishing Rod

You can learn how to cast in a backyard, a local park, pool, baseball field, wherever! An excellent time to learn or improve accuracy is to practice during the off season.

Place your index finger over the line and create tension between the line and rod.

Open the bail of the fishing reel so your index finger is holding the weight of your lure or bait.

Position the rod behind you. "Pitch" forward with both arms and launch your lure.

As the rod moves overhead, release the line from your index finger.

Once the lure or bait hits the water, and you have reached your desired depth, close the bail of the fishing reel and start to retrieve.

How To Spool Line On A Spinning Fishing Reel

You can get creative with spooling line on your reel. As long as it unwinds straight onto your reel with a little pressure, you can use pretty much anything. In this video I demonstrate how to spool with your fishing bag.
